Prison Island, also known as Changuu or Quarantine Island, is a small island located in the Indian Ocean, just three miles off the western coast Zanzibar. In the 1860's, this island was thought to be used as a prison for rebellious slaves, but never housed any prisoners. Instead, it became a place for those with Yellow Fever to quarantine, but that only happened for about six months. Now, its ruins are home to the giant Aldabra Tortoise! Four were brought over from the island of Seychelles, and now the island is home to over 100 tortoises, with the oldest being 150 years old! There are also peacocks, many small birds, and Blue Duikers on the island! There is also a private lodge on the island, Changuu Private Lodge, where you can stay, if you would like to indulge in its beauty overnight! While we were there, we were the only two visitors on the island! What a unique experience!
